FAQ

frequently asked questions: read before booking

How much do you charge?

I price each tattoo individually and offer a privilege based sliding-scale option pricing. In response to your booking form, I will provide a price quote with a high and low end. My standard rate tends to be about $150/hr. For more info, see the "Pricing info" page.

What is sliding scale?

Sliding scale is a way for me to offer my services to those that would usually otherwise lack the access to tattooing because of systemic monetary barriers. To utilize sliding scale, just mention this need (or your maximum budget) in the booking form. In response, I will offer a rate within $100-145/hr. You may pay any price within this scale, no explanation needed.

Because of my privilege, it is my responsibility to do what I can to best serve those who paved the way before me, and those more burdened by oppression, and white supremacy than myself.

Consider paying full price if you are white, cis-gendered, or able-bodied, have a salaried job or generational wealth or are a homeowner. Consider paying an amount on the sliding scale of you are a BI/POC or melanated person, a trans person, disabled or have medical bills that insurance does not cover.

What type of payment do you accept?

For deposits, I accept Zelle, and Cash App. For the day of, I strongly prefer cash, but I will also accept Zelle. I do not accept Venmo or Paypal under any circumstances. I am open to working with budgets that meet my needs, flat-rates for large scale projects, trades of equal value goods or services, and payment plans, so please email me with any questions!

How do I make an appointment?

To book any service, fill out a booking form on this website, under the booking tab, or send an email to spaceghosttattoo@gmail.com or text (872)703-8228. Include the desired tattoo, with placement size and budget, and your availability.

Where are you located?

I tattoo from a private shop in Logan Square, Chicago IL, 60618 that I co-own with another tattoo artist. The exact address is disclosed upon booking. It is accessible by a flight of stairs, and there is no elevator unfortunately therefore it is not accessible to non-ambulatory wheelchair users. If accessibility is an issue for you, please reach out, as I offer house calls

Are you accepting appointments?

My books are always open. This means I'm always taking tattoo appointments. If you don't see availability posted that lines up with you, feel free to write in your future availability in the booking form.

Are you a COVID conscious tattoo artist?

I am immunocompromised, and take my health and the health of my community very seriously. I wear a face mask, and I ask my clients to be masked with at least a k/n95 facemask the entire session, unless eating or drinking, and I have a HEPA air filter on at all times. I take frequent COVID tests and encourage you to take one before our appointment. However, since I co-operate my studio, there may be up to three others in the room not masking. If you're in need of a face mask, don't hesitate to ask for one because I have plenty. Or, get in contact with the Chicago mask bloc to get free k/n95's delivered (@chicagomaskbloc on instagram)

Can I bring a guest?

You may bring only one guest to your appointment. I ask all  my clients at the appointment to wear a K/N95 mask. There is a small couch in studio, and there are a many coffee shops, restaurants, and book stores near by. I share the studio with one other artist, so there will only be 4 people in the space at one time max.

What if I'm running late to my appointment?

I prioritize open communication, so if you're running a couple minutes late, just shoot me a text with an eta. If you're running more than 30 minutes late, a small fee may be applied, or we may have to reschedule, if it runs into other clients appointments.

I need a touch-up, how do I book one?

To book a touchup, please email me with photos of the tattoo, and your availability. All touch-ups are free, and do not require a deposit to book.

Do you repeat flash?

Yes, all flash is repeatable. you may always ask for the flash to be done in  different color/s or for a custom tattoo based off of any flash design.

What is hand-poke tattooing?
Do you tattoo with a machine?

"Hand-poke" tattooing is one of many names for manual, or machine free tattooing. Hand-poke tattooing is a classic way to tattoo that doesn't use a machine, or electricity. It was originally utilized by indigenous peoples, rich with history, and is now widely used because of its accessibility. Each needle poke is manually pushed into the skin by hand. This makes for a slower, quieter, and more rhythmic experience. It is not more or less painful than a machine tattoo but it can be less traumatic to the skin than a machine tattoo, and hand-poke tattoos tend to heal faster. Machine-free tattooing can be done in any style and they can look exactly like a machine tattoo, or extremely different, and your specific experience will depend on the artist's practices. I began hand-poke tattooing in Feb '22. I am currently learning how to tattoo with a machine and have been for 2 years.

What does it mean to be trauma-informed?

To be trauma informed means that I have education about what trauma is, and how it manifests in the body, mind and spirit. I practice radical acceptance in an informed consent-driven approach. This looks like, reestablishing consent throughout the tattoo process, talking through what I'm doing and why, before doing so, and providing a clean, comfortable and safe space to experience transformative pain. Some books I have used in this education are: My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem, The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor, Self-CompassionFierce Self-Compassion, and The Yin and Yang of Self-Compassion by Kristen Neff PhD, Unmasking Autism by Devon Price PhD, and What My Bones Know, by Stephanie Foo, as well as attending weekly trauma therapy myself, since 2019.   Feel free to email me if you have any questions about my practice.

What if I don't like my custom design?

I do not copy anything exactly for customs, so sometimes this happens! Don't worry, if you don't like the design/s I have prepared for you, small changes can always be made day of. If a redesign has to take place, we will move the appointment forward as a consultation. During this time you may tell me everything you have in mind while I draw and take notes. Your deposit will cover the consultation appointment and you will place a new deposit for your new appointment date.

Can I use numbing cream?

I strongly suggest against using any numbing creams before coming to a tattoo appointment, as they are not FDA approved, and cause unpredictable healing and excess damage to the skin or infection. I use Bactine throughout my session, as it contains 4% lidocaine, and numbs after the skin is broken.

I want a color tattoo but I'm worried about how it might heal. Do you do color tests?

I offer a free color test for melanated folks who want to book a color tattoo. I will create a small design, using the colors we have in mind, then after it heals (approx. 3 weeks to a month), we will use our favorite colors in the final tattoo. Just shoot me an inquiry if this interests you.

Do you accept non-monetary tips?

Yes! Although tipping is considered "customary" in tattooing, I understand that the cost of the tattoo alone can be a lot for some. If you feel compelled to throw an extra thank you my way, I accept tips in any form: drinks, lunch, w**d, books, plant cuttings, your art etc.

Do you do trades?

Yes! Its a goal of mine to live as anti-capitalist as I can, so if both of our needs are met in the trade I'm happy to. Things I'm interested in trading my services for: tattoos or tattoo supplies, haircut/color, body work such as massage, acupuncture facia release ect, an unlocked iPhone 15 or newer, grocery store gift cards or nutrition/meal services, w**d, home goods/services such as furniture or cleaning services, photoshoot/headshots. I'm open to more things as well so reach out if this applies to you!

I can't get a tattoo right now but I still want to support you. How can I do this?

My clients and friends are the reason why I get to follow my dreams and passion and help change lives with tattooing. Sharing and commenting my posts on social media, and word of mouth are extremely helpful to my growth. You may also always send me coffee money over Zelle or Cash App (spaceghosttattoo@gmail.com / $spaceghosttattoo), or you can commission other artwork, such as stickers, a print, a custom painting or drawing, or customized clothing art.
